Number 2 Martin Place is a commercial high-rise and significant heritage building located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD. Often recognised as the Paspaley Building, it is also home to a range of corporate tenants, including banks, law firms and other professional services companies.
The building was originally constructed in the late 19th century by prominent American architect, Edward Raht, and is listed on the NSW State Heritage Register. Its façade is almost completely constructed from trachyte, a fine-grained volcanic rock.
Premier Waterproofing was engaged directly by the owners of 2 Martin Place to investigate a series of major water leaks into the building.
The Premier team commenced with a detailed forensic investigation, diagnostic testing, water testing and coloured dye testing, to identify and trace the source of the water leaks. It was soon discovered that the main waterproofing barrier of the roof, its bitumen membrane, had failed. A total renovation and upgrade was required.
The Premier team had several obstacles to overcome, including the removal of hazardous building materials – specifically asbestos in the old roof membrane, which had been painted over. Once safely removed, the old membrane was replaced with a multi-layered, torch applied, bituminous sheet membrane system.
These works were all completed in compliance with the building’s heritage status requirements.
